Security issues about eye protection that Mr Trump also ignored: the harm of laser radiation  and eyes protection ways

On August 21, 2017, local time, the United States ushered in a rare solar eclipse landscape. This eclipse formed a total solar eclipse belt with a width of about 113 kilometers on the surface of the earth. It runs through the continental United States from northwest to southeast. Total eclipses can be observed in 14 US states. The 12.2 million Americans living in the total solar eclipse zone from Lincoln City, Oregon in the west to Charleston, South Carolina, and astronomy enthusiasts from all over the world experienced total darkness in about two minutes.

US President Mr Trump also joined the nation to observe the eclipse craze. He, his wife Melania and son Barron also watched the total solar eclipse together with the White House. But he didn’t pay attention to his family’s warm prompts at first, narrowed his eyes to the sky without wearing goggles or any glasses.

On the point of Safety Protection when Watching Solar Eclipse

It is very important to wear goggles during an eclipse, because looking directly at the sun may damage people’s eyes. The goggles specially made to see the solar eclipse are equipped with solar filters with special purposes, which can filter out all harmful ultraviolet and infrared rays and almost all strong visible light, so that people can observe the solar eclipse safely.

Watching solar eclipses (partial eclipse, ring eclipse, and total eclipse) requires the use of professional observation tools to protect human eyes. The core part is the lens, which must use professional light-reducing film or light-reducing film. The light-reducing film is made of metal plated film, polycarbonate, polyester fiber film and other materials. The ideal solar dimming sheet has a maximum transmission rate of 0.0032% (three hundred thousandths), and should effectively filter ultraviolet rays and infrared rays.

Those pseudo-experts who watched the total solar eclipse through smoked black glass, photographic film, X-rays, sunglasses, etc. are extremely dangerous.

Eye protection measures in industry

The same misunderstanding exists in the eye protection measures in the industrial field. The protection of laser processing equipment that the eyes can see directly is often overlooked.

Since the cornea and conjunctiva of the human eye are not protected by the stratum corneum of the general skin, the selection of the safety shield and PPE (goggles) in the laser processing equipment also needs to reach a professional level of protection. Obviously, the use of ordinary brown glass or sunglasses cannot provide sufficient protection.

Laser radiation can cause damage to eyes and skin. Such damage can be caused not only by the laser radiation directly, but also by the scattered radiation and reflection of the processed parts or machines. The degree of injury is determined by factors such as the affected time, laser energy and wavelength.

Laser risk assessment and safety protection

According to the potential danger of the laser unit, the laser unit and its installation can be divided into seven laser classes: Class 1 is the safest and Class 4 may be the most harmful. These levels are defined in detail in the first part of the EN 60825 series of standards, the summary is as follows:

In addition to the most intuitive hazard of laser radiation, other types of hazards that use laser emitting units need to be identified through risk assessment, which may include:

-Electrical contact with electrical control unit;

-Overpressure status of cooling compressed air;

-Contact or swallowing of chemical water coolant with human body;

-Harmful dust or steam generated during the manufacturing process;

-Noise generated during operation;

-Toxic metal compounds used on the lens;

-Squeeze caused when the laser head or protective cover moves.

So we recommend our laser protection glasses and goggles as the following:

With this kind of glasses you can do laser hair removal, laser treatment, laser marking or any kind of laser application with carefree
